Croix Marchaterre Les Cayes, Haiti

Home Page

Welcome to Croix Marchaterre, a community of little geographic significance, except that it is in a country at the center of our universe for one brief moment as the earthquake of January 12, 2010 shook Haiti and the world.

History

  • Pa Marchaterre lived in an ancient colonial house and planted a crucifix which was destroyed by the cyclone of August 10th, 1928.
  • The crucifix was later rebuilt after the popular uprising of 1929 which gave the sign of the end of the first American occupation of Haiti (1915-1934).
  • The village took then the historical name of Crucifix-Martyr to memorialize the memory of the patriots fallen here in the field of honour on December 6th, 1929. The names of the martyrs were inscribed on the Crucifix, at the entrance of the village.
  • Marchaterre became the residence of Sydney Guenin who's daughter, Gulna Guenin, married Luke Edgard Douyon of Cayes.
  • Marchaterre, once a happy place of family holidays, is now a symbolic homage to the Douyon matriach, carrying the stamp of its founders.
